Craigslist is a very popular classified website. Job seekers, employers, buyers and sellers all use craigslist to handle many different resources. Be AWARE, there are SCAMMERS on this website, waiting to take your money and identity. Here are a few warning signs to look out for:

  •  Be wary of giving out your personal information. Never disclose your social security number, birth date, account number, or personal identification number.
  •  Be careful with online transactions. Never wire any money via Money Gram, Western Union, or Pay Pal.
  • Do not agree to meet anyone at their home. (It is always best to meet in a public place and maybe even bring along a relative or friend. Examples: restaurant or coffee shop).
  •  Never accept any certified checks. (If the checks bounce, your bank will hold you liable for the funds).
  •  Watch out for fake email addresses.
  •  Make sure to research the company. (You can copy and paste the company name in the GOOGLE search engine).
  • Try to do business with local companies/persons in your area or town.

Craigslist is a great place to make purchases, post unwanted items for sale, look for jobs, and find employable people, but you must be careful. Remember, have fun and proceed with caution.

If you are a victim of a scam, please contact your local police department.
