Blogs :: think you know? u have no idea

I must say i am glad in the work I do. Just hear me out.. So i posted a blogg a couple weeks ago titled "Just Because" . And if i had to add a sentence to that i would definitely add, "Just because Im balck does not mean i know how to use a gun." I was asked this question as a group of women interviewd me.This line is all that could run through my head as i left the BMC on Thursday. The expierence in all was cool, I learned a lot about my team and the different perspectives of living in Richmond. After all the things i have expierenced, all the people i have lost its a wonder if im not a gang banger who DOES know how to use a gun. BUT I RYSE above the streotypes, and dont fall victim to my society's downfalls.

The DJT was interviewed on how we cope and handle the situations we go through living in Richmond. One word that was easily tossed around was "Ignorant" clearly it offended some of us , and me and Tania were brave enough to clarify and defend our generation. No we are not ignorant, but because we have people who thinks this way , teens often turn to ignorance as an excuse as if its whats expected.

Just because... Our generation has problems does not mean were ignorant, and if we are it is because the generation before us failed to educate us. I felt proud of me and Tania  just because we stood up for what was misunderstood. No one knows the life we live and even if you wrote about us video taped us or interviewed us 7 days a week you will never know how it feels unless your in the situation for more than just a few days on "business" or "research".

No matter how bad Richmond is looked at, there are great things blooming from it, and the DJT is definitely one of them.. JUST BECAUSE you think you know , you have no idea!

i agree with da person before me

I completely agree with your statements. Many times people are judged based on stereotype, but it shouldn't be that way. Each person is their own individual.

I think you walked away with a very important lesson. You (the youth of Richmond) are the only people who can truly represent yourselves, your perspectives, and the issues facing the youth in your community. That's why the work of the DJT is so important!
