Thinking about it, it is hard to think about one thing that makes me unique, because for me it all depends on where I am. For example when I’m at home, I’m unique because I’m the first in my family to graduate high school and attain college. When my family came to the United State my brother and sister was already old. My brother who was already married and had two kid at the time, try attaining English learning school and community college, but he later stop because he has to work so he can help his own family. My sister who was put straight in high school, without any history of grad and elementary education almost graduated, but drop out in the 12th grad due to the fact she was pregnant and was embarrass to continue here last month of school. As for me, being the first to attain school since preschool till now, is a blessing. Being educated makes me unique at home.

Another thing that makes me unique, when I am not at home, Is that I am Khmu and proud of it. Growing up, a lot of people always thought I was Asian, Chinese, Japanese or Filipino. At first, when I was young I use to be embarrass and shy to explain to people that I’m Khmu and what is Khmu. So I use to say I’m just Asian. Then as I got older I use to tell kids I was Laos, because that where my family was from. Then in high school, after being educated about on Khmu history through oral/ family story, online research and books. Now I enjoy hearing story/ drunk lecture that my elder tells. I am always happy to explain to people what is Khmu.

Here a short summery of the Khmu people- Khmu people/tribe is the indigenous people of Laos located in Southeast Asian. Khmu was the native of the land, until they was taken over by the Lao people, just like the way the European took over the Native American Land. Khmu is also a language. Today the Khmu reside in the upland of Laos, living the simple life as famers. Because of the Vietnam War A lot of ethic group of Laos was recruited by the CIA to take part in the war. That led to the Southeast East Asian refugee, where many came to the US. Till today in Laos Khmu is still known to be the “Guardian/protector of the land”
