Proposition 23 will be voted on November by California residents. Supporters call it the "Job Initiative", and opponents call it "Dirty Energy". Prop 23 driving force is two oil giants; Valero and Tereso from Texas. Prop 23 will suspend AB 32, what's is AB 32?
AB 32 is known as the Global Warming Solution Act, passed in 2006. It will be implemented in 2012 through 2020, what will it do? It will implement regulations to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (pollution). Basically, its going to the decrease the pollution from refineries, incinerators and other facilities that release pollution. This is all in the pursuit to create a more sustainable, healthy and just environment for all elements (people, animals, insects, plants...).
Why do supporters call it the "Job Initiative"? They believe that AB 32 will kill jobs, say what?!? why? Because many corporations and businesses will be forced to buy, replace or exchange their means of production to a greener technology. Another argument is that by passing AB 32 the price of oil, electricity, basically energy will rise.
Why "Dirty Energy"? Opponents argue that by passing Prop 23 and allowing corporations to pollute more will affect even more the health of the communities who live close to facilities that pollute. The communities that will affective first and worst will be communities of color, why? Environmental racism is a term that describes the disproportion of communities of color living next to facilities, highways, that pollute in big numbers. With this said, communities such as Richmond will be impacted by the increase of pollution.
What does that mean? more pollution equals to more health problems! more people with asthma, cancer and other health problems, many that are adverse. Heard of climate change? it will make problems worst, like with the flooding communities all over the world; due to melting glaciers. I don't even want to get into water, but just know that some countries are in war over water. What can you do?
Tell your family, tell a friend, tell a stranger! its going to affect us all. What can you do? ride your bike, ride bart, carpool when possible. What else can you do? get involve. Write back to me if you are interested. This is bigger than any single person, this will affect us all. I love my life, I love mother nature, I love to drink water, I
