Bobby Hutton was the first member to join the Black Panther Party for Self-Defense in 1966. Born in 1950 he was sixteen years old when he joined assuming the position of treasurer. He was an organizer who helped lead twenty-six fellow Black Panther to Sacramento to protest a new gun bill called the Mulford act that made it illegal to carry a gun. This was a direct response to the Black Panthers campaign to patrol the community to prevent police brutality. In the protest all twenty-seven members were arrested. On April 6, 1968 Bobby Hutton was riding in a car with Eldridge Cleaver, and other BP members when the they were ambushed by the Oakland Police. To take cover Hutton and Cleaver ran into a basement for protection but the police officers surrounded the basement and proceeded to shot at them for over an hour. When a tear-gas canister was thrown in they decided to surrender.  Bobby Hutton was the first one to step out with his hands in the air. Once he was visible he was shot twelve times and killed on instant. He died two days after the death of Martin Luther King jr.

Bobby Hutton’s death strengthened the Black Panthers Party. He represents a strong youth organizer who fought for liberation of the black community.
