Education is my form of resistance. I feel that through a good education one can achieve success regardless of the obstacles that have stood in their way. Unfortunately for youth in California it is becoming increasingly difficult to acquire a descent education. Currently, California is ranked 49th in state funding for education and ranked number one in the country on prison spending. California houses more prisons then the rest of the continental United States combined. This is an incredible discrepancy that displays a large disadvantage to youth in California. The states lack of adequate appropriation of state funding is creating an oppressive cycle that leads to the criminalization of urban youth. Rather than being encouraged to go on to college, re-incarceration for juvenile offenders is at an all time high. This is an issue that strongly effects Richmond and the larger bay area.
So in light of the recent struggle against budget cuts at the university level, let us remember that the fight needs to encompass our youth. This is about QUALITY EDUCATION FOR ALL!

Valerie I totally agree with you. Did you know the sanitation workers make more than teachers. Does this means that we value our trash more than our teachers? We need to get our community more focused on education and less on building more prisons.
