 Seeking Female Youth Crew Leaders for Summer Job in Richmond!

The Student Conservation Association (SCA) seeks qualified individuals to lead a 4-5 week program with Richmond youth this summer. 
(Other positions are available for both males and females in San Francisco and San Mateo County for residents of those counties).   

Primary Responsibilities:
Supervise up to 8 youth, ages 15-19, for 4-5 weeks, working either in East Bay Regional Parks or at the Red Oak Victory Ship (Rosie the Riveter/WW II National Historical Park) in Richmond this summer. 
The East Bay Regional Parks crew will be doing brush-clearing, trail maintenance and other fire prevention work, 
while the Red Oak Victory Ship crew will focus on ship and dock maintenance and public outreach/interpretation of this historical park site. 
Crew leaders will drive participants to and from work each day from a central Richmond location, help plan and lead member orientation, 
educational activities and field trips, and an overnight camping trip. Leaders must also ensure participants’ safety and well-being, 
track and document youth participation and work accomplished, and complete a mandatory leader training. 
We have already hired the male leaders for these positions, and are now seeking two female leaders. 
Program Dates: 
Red Oak Victory Ship/Rosie the Riveter NHP: June 28 – July 23, 2010 (dates to be confirmed)
East Bay Regional Parks: July 2 – Aug. 9, 2010 (dates to be confirmed)

Mandatory Training Dates: June 10-17, 2010 
Compensation: $2,500 - $3,300 total depending on number of hours and length of crew 

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with urban youth; strong interest in working with and mentoring youth
  • Minimum 21 years of age
  • Possess a valid driver's license 3+ yrs. and an MVR that meets SCA standards
  • Current CPR and First Aid certifications or ability to obtain
  • Pass a criminal background check that meets SCA Standards
  • Attend a Crew Leader Orientation and Trail Skills Training.
  • Previous outdoor skills or manual labor experience (trailbuilding, landscaping, construction, etc.) preferred
  • Local Richmond resident preferred, but not required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment: Applicant must be able to:

  • Carry heavy loads up to 40 lbs
  • Use a variety of hand tools
  • Hike and work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Drive a passenger mini-van and/or SUV in a variety of weather conditions
