Community :: Stereotypes, I am...
Being the first born U.S.A citizen in my family is a tough situation. My parents did not have documents for a long time. By them not being educated, school was a little more challenging. Since, I talk both spanish and english it was very easy for me to mix the wording or pronounce words differently. Leading to people categorizing me as a "beaner", which in my perspective is lack of respect. The stereotypes really hit me in high school, engaging myself in a multiracial relationship came with a lot of gossip.
I experienced racism at a young age, and all the names I was called were created by stereotypes. My friends started calling me "mayate lover" which is the same as saying "nigg*r lover". His father would say that I was less than a woman because of my ethnicity. He would try to convince him of leaving me by saying that he needed a real woman in his life. Remembering about the times, where both black and brown people discriminated leads me to think about this subject a little deeper. If we look back in history, stereotypes have led us to segregate from one another. The worse part of it all, is us not giving each other a chance. Judging one another before even knowing our culture and background. Breaking out of stereotypes have changed my life for the better.
In high school I would justify my comments by saying that people did it to me, so why can't I do it to them. Looking back the only person who suffered by that poor decision was myself. I stopped myself from meeting people who could of changed my life. I know it sounds intense but its the truth and being more open to meeting people convince me of that. I have all different kinds of friends, and I even have friends that will not come together, due to first expressions of one another. Stereotypes never lead to anything positive and its disrespectful.

i know exactly what you are talking about and went through i am mexican and my family believes in marrying or dating your own kind whatever that is, but i also have a daughter who is african american my grandmother told me all those same things. But still till this day people are discriminating and it is sad but you are right stereotypes never lead to anything positive.
